While we were still conceptualizing our product, we envisioned a “biopill” that could be dropped into the water and be broken down to denitrify our groundwater. We believed that free bacteria would react quicker and speed up the denitrification process. However, after researching free and immobilized cells, we discovered there aren’t many benefits to using free-moving cells during denitrification. Immobilized cells are confined to a physical space; it allows our project to be reusable and faster, so we decided immobilized cells would work best for our project. This contradicted our original plans, but it shows how much we have learned from our valuable research. Our initial idea was flawed and through our research, we were able to come up with a plan that makes our project more efficient.
